Installing sun-java6-jre on Ubuntu 10.10

Today I was trying to install Sun Java JRE.

to install sun-java6-jre on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, type the commands below in Terminal:

Code:

sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner"

Code:

sudo apt-get update

Code:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre

Or
$ sudo apt-get install mplayer sun-java6-jre

Configure the default Java

We need to configure it at the default java (selection 6, /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java, in the example below)

$ sudo update-alternatives --config java

There are 3 alternatives which provide `java'. Keep the default one, which is 0

Now download the player from below link

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jajuk/files/jajuk/1.9.2/jajuk_1.9.2-2_all.deb/download

then open it with ubuntu software centre and you done.

Use jajuk to open it.

Install Windows XP on Your Pre-Installed Windows Vista Computer

The question I am asked most often is “How do I install a dual-boot with Windows XP on my new Windows Vista computer?” The answer is that it’s not that difficult, it’s just very time consuming, and you need to own a copy of Windows XP.

Note that you should not attempt this if you aren’t ready to troubleshoot any problems that might occur.

The first issue we encounter is that computers with pre-installed operating systems take up the entire drive. Luckily Microsoft included the Shrink volume feature in Vista, so we can easily shrink the Vista partition down to make room for XP.

Open the Computer Management panel, which you can find under Administrative tools or by right-clicking the Computer item in the start menu and choosing Manage. Find the Disk Management item in the list and select that.

Now we’ll shrink our volume down by right-clicking on the main hard drive and choosing Shrink Volume.

Now you can choose the size that you want to shrink, which really means you are choosing the size that you want your XP partition to be. Whatever you do, don’t just use the default. I chose roughly 10gb by entering 10000 into the amount.

The next step might be confusing, because we need to change the cd-rom drive that’s invariably taking up D: at the moment, because we want to use D: for the Windows XP partition, but it’s already taken by the cd-rom drive. If you skip this step than XP will install onto the E: drive, which isn’t the end of the world, but it’s not quite as tidy.

Right-click on the cd-rom drive in the list and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths from the menu.

Now we’ll change the CD drive to use E: by selecting that in the drop-down.

Now we can create a new partition for XP to live on and make sure that the drive letter is set the way we want. If you do not create a partition now the XP install will do so automatically, but it’s easier and cleaner to do it this way.

Right-click on the Unallocated free space area and then select New Simple Volume from the menu.

Follow through the wizard and select whatever options you’d like, making sure to use D: as the drive letter.

Now you will need to close out of disk management and reboot your computer. This is because we can’t do the next step until we reboot. (you can try, but it won’t work)

So we’ve come back from rebooting… open up Computer from the start menu and then right-click on the D: drive and select properties. Give your partition a meaningful name like “XP”. It would be wise to name the C: drive to “Vista” at this point as well.

Now you’ll want to pop your XP cd into the drive and boot off it. You may have to configure your BIOS to enable booting off the CD drive, or if your computer says something like “Hit Esc for boot menu” you might want to use that.

Once you come to the screen where you can choose the partition to install on, then choose either the unpartitioned space or the new partition you created. Whatever you do, don’t try and install onto your Vista partition! See how much cleaner it is now that we’ve labeled each partition distinctly?

We’ll assume XP is completely installed at this point, and you will have lost your ability to boot into Windows Vista, so we’ll need to use the VistaBootPro utility to restore the Vista boot loader.

Update: VistaBootPro is no longer free, but you can still download the free version.

During the install you’ll be forced to install the .NET 2.0 framework. Open up VistaBootPRO and then click on the System Bootloader tab. Check the “Windows Vista Bootloader” and then “All Drives” radio buttons, and then click on the Install Bootloader button.

At this point, the Windows Vista bootloader is installed and you’ll only be able to boot into Vista, but we’ll fix that. Instead of manually doing the work, we’ll just click the Diagnostics menu item and then choose Run Diagnostics from the menu.

This will scan your computer and then automatically fill in the XP version.. click on the “Manage OS Entries” tab and then click in the textbox for Rename OS Entry, and name it something useful like “Windows XP” or “The Windows That Works”

Click the Apply Updates button and then reboot your computer… you should see your shiny new boot manager with both operating systems in the list!

If you get an error saying “unable to find ntldr” when trying to boot XP, you’ll need to do the following:

Find the hidden files ntldr and ntdetect.com in the root of your Vista drive and copy them to the root of your XP drive.

If you can’t find the files there, you can find them in the \i386\ folder on your XP install cd

There’s more information on this forum thread, thanks to nrv1013

This is a critical piece of information: Windows XP will be installed on the D: drive, even in Windows XP… so you’ll need to keep that in mind when tweaking your system.

You can share information between the drives, but I wouldn’t recommend messing with the other operating system’s partition too much… it might get angry and bite you. Or screw up your files. What I do recommend is that you store most of your files on a third drive shared between the operating systems… you could call that partition “Data”.

I’m going to write a number of followup articles dealing with all of the issues with dual-boot systems, so subscribe to the feed for updates.

If you have issues with your dual-boot system, I’d recommend creating a new topic in our Vista forum, and we’ll try and help you.

If you have issues with using the shrink volume feature, check this article for some tips.

WELCOME TO MUMBAI ………………….

Suvendu Roy of Titan Industries shares his inspirational encounter
with a rickshaw driver in Mumbai:

Last Sunday, my wife, kid and I had to travel to Andheri from Bandra.

When I waved at a passing auto rickshaw, little did I expect that
this ride would be any different!

As we set off, my eyes fell on a few magazines (kept in an aircraft
style pouch) behind the driver’s back rest. I looked in front and
there was a small TV. The driver had put on the Doordarshan channel.

My wife and I looked at each other with disbelief and amusement. In
front of me was a small first-aid box with cotton, dettol and some
medicines. This was enough for me to realize that I was in a special
vehicle. Then I looked round again, and discovered more – there was a
radio, fire extinguisher, wall clock, calendar, and pictures and
symbols of all faiths – from Islam and Christianity to Buddhism,
Hinduism and Sikhism. There were also pictures of the heroes of
26/11- Kamte, Salaskar, Karkare and Unnikrishnan. I
realised that not only my vehicle, but also my driver was special.

I started chatting with him and the initial sense of ridicule and
disbelief gradually diminished. I gathered that he had been driving an
auto rickshaw for the past 8-9 years; he had lost his job when his
employer’s plastic company was shut down. He had two school-going
children, and he drove from 8 in the morning till 10 at night. No
break unless he was unwell.

“Sahab, ghar mein baith ke TV dekh kar kya faida? Do paisa income
karega toh future mein kaam aayega.”

We realized that we had come across a man who represents Mumbai – the
spirit of work, the spirit of travel and the spirit of excelling in
life. I asked him whether he does anything else as I figured that he
did not have too much spare time. He said that he goes to an old age
home for women in Andheri once a week or whenever he has some extra
income, where he donates tooth brushes, toothpastes, soap, hair oil,
and other items of daily use. He pointed out to a painted message
below the meter that read: “25 per cent discount on metered fare for
the handicapped. Free rides for blind passengers up to Rs50″.

My wife and I were struck with awe. The man was a HERO! A hero who
deserves all our respect.

Our journey came to an end; 45 minutes of a lesson in humility,
selflessness and of a hero-worshipping Mumbai-m temporary home. We
disembarked, and all I could do was to pay him a tip that would hardly
cover a free ride for a blind man.

I hope, one day, you too have a chance to meet Mr Sandeep Bachhe in
his auto rickshaw – MH-02-Z-8508.

BulkUpload – SQLXML

There have been loads of third party tools that have evolved in the recent past to transfer and upload data from one system to another. With XML becoming the defacto standards for communication between various layers of an application we have to take this seriously. Biztalk and many other softwares essentially do this to great effect. We have also discussed one similar functionality that SQL Server inherently supplies, OPENXML.

In this article we move one step further in exploring the bulk upload functionality that comes with SQLXML to upload voluminous XML data files into SQL Server 2000. We would also walk through a simple code sample to illustrate its features. You can insert XML data into a SQL Server database by using an INSERT statement and the OPENXML function; however, the bulk load utility provides higher performance when you need to insert large amounts of XML data.

The Execute method of the XML Bulk Load object model takes two parameters:

An annotated XML Schema Definition (XSD). The XML Bulk Load utility interprets this mapping schema and the annotations that are specified in the schema in identifying the SQL Server tables into which the XML data is to be inserted.

An XML document or document fragment (a document without a single top-level element). A file name or a stream from which XML Bulk Load can read can be specified.

So lets get started and know how we can upload XML files into our relational world databases. We need three inputs the relational database, XSD to work with and the XML document to upload.

XSD

A typical XSD used for this example is:

<xsd:schema xmlns:xsd=”http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema”

xmlns:sql=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:mapping-schema”>

<xsd:element name=”Customers” sql:relation=”Persons” >

<xsd:complexType>

<xsd:sequence>

<xsd:element name=”PersonID” type=”xsd:integer” />

<xsd:element name=”FirstName” type=”xsd:string” />

<xsd:element name=”LastName” type=”xsd:string” />

</xsd:sequence>

</xsd:complexType>

</xsd:element>

</xsd:schema>

We map the XMLs Customers tag to Persons table in the SQL Server and then upload each of the data into the table.

XML File

<ROOT>

<Customers>

<PersonID>1</PersonID>

<LastName>Vinod</LastName>

<FirstName>Kumar</FirstName>

</Customers>

<Customers>

<PersonID>2</PersonID>

<LastName>Saravana</LastName>

<FirstName>Kumar</FirstName>

</Customers>

</ROOT>

We have the sample file also to upload. Since we have mapped to the database table we need a table to upload the same. Use the following script to create the table.

CREATE TABLE Persons

(PersonID int PRIMARY KEY,

LastName Varchar(30),

FirstName Varchar(30))

Uploading

So to upload we have to instantiate the XML Bulk Load object and pass these two file and execute the command. Its as simple as that.

Dim objBL As Object

objBL = CreateObject(“SQLXMLBulkLoad.SQLXMLBulkload.3.0″)

objBL.ConnectionString = “provider=SQLOLEDB.1;data source=localhost;database=Northwind;” & _

“integrated security=SSPI”

objBL.Execute(“Schema.xml”, “XMLData.xml”)

objBL = Nothing

After executing the above code you can query the Persons table to find that the two rows from the XML File has been uploaded into the database.

Conclusion

We have just touched the surface by executing a simple code block to do the upload process. There are tons and tons of variety in using this XML Bulk Upload functionality. We would discuss them as and when time permits in the future. You can refer to the SQLXML Online documentaiton for more technical and complecated scenarios.
